Thursday, March 3, 5:30 PM - At the Envision Center
Lecture: Visualization: Science and Art
This talk presents a range of research projects and artworks that introduce current trends in the field information visualization. The projects include: interactive representations of biological pathways that enable the visual analysis of protein-protein interactions; dynamic network visualizations of the human brain connectome; and a public art installation that explores connections between photographic images and literary themes in the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez' One Hundred Years of Solitude. In addition to describing details about these individual projects, the talk will explore the potential of integrating artistic and scientific approaches to research.

Friday, March 4, 4-7 PM - In Knoy 314
Workshop: Creative Shader Programming
This workshop introduces programmers to the use of GLSL vertex and fragment shaders in WebGL applications that can run in the browser.
Attendees will learn how to create their own shader programs to generate novel artistic effects. Level: Intermediate (some familiarity with programming in Javascript will be helpful). Requirements: A laptop with a new version of Chrome installed.

I hope to see you on Thursday and Friday,

Hello All,

We are watching Manufactured Landscape about the photographer Edward Burtynski today.
I found a link to the movie on Hulu for free. If you can't make it to the class due to the heavy snow forecasted throughout the day, please watch the film on your own time and leave a feedback before the Spring break.

Leave a feedback on Andreas Gursky and try to answer questions I raised in the class. It's due by March 2nd.

1.Is the deadan’s detached, distant, analytical, banal approach somehow distill our cultural mood?
2. Does it represent the way people feel disconnected from one another, even if technology makes them more interconnected than ever?
3. And is deadpan photography a refuge or reflection of emotion when we are overwhelmed with terrorism, war, ecological and natural disaster?
4. Does its uniformity of the style reflect our mass-produced, chain-store world?
5. Has our ability to document just about anything made us do just that...

Hello A&D!

We are now accepting entries for the annual Art and Design Undergraduate Exhibition *and* the next Westwood. Interested students should bring their work to the galleries. All entry forms are available onsite. Key points below:

·         We are accepting entries Monday – Wednesday, 10 am – 5 pm.
·         Students can submit entries for one or both opportunities; entry is separate for each competition.
·         The Undergraduate Exhibition is limited to undergraduate students, and work must have been created for an A&D course.
·         Westwood entries can be any medium, do not have to have been created for an A&D course, and graduate students are also eligible to enter.
·         Timing is such that works can be exhibited in both shows – there is no conflict.

Let me know if you have any questions. Details can be found on the Rueff Galleries website and in the galleries. Please encourage your students to enter! So far, my limited and informal polling suggests that students have not yet heard about these opportunities from their instructors. Please share!!

Sunday, February 7, 2016

Don't forget to leave a feedback about the documentary on George Rousse and feedback about the video art exhibition, Still Moving at the Rueff Gallery (the show is taken down)

They are due by the 10th, Wednesday.

Also, we are meeting at WTHR Hall at 7:30 for Dick Blau's talk on Wednesday instead of meeting at 5:30 for the class.

See you.

Hello Everyone,

On Thursday Feb 11 at 11:30-1:20 DICK BLAU will hold a photography workshop with Lynn's AD119-1 class and anyone interested. He would like students to send him some (no more than 2 small jpegs) of their pictures (dickblau@gmail.com) and also to send him one comment or question about one image from his book THICKER THAN WATER  (images of which are available here on his website:
http://dickblau.com/thicker-than-water/) or from POLKA HEARTLAND.

You are required to come to the talk, Feb 10th, WTHR 172 at 7:30PM. In the beginning of the semester, we have agreed that everyone would be able to attend the talk, so the whole class is meeting at WTHR 172 at 7:30 instead of having a class at 5:30.

Also anyone interested in workshop MUST send him questions or comments about his work. Please do send him any photographs you have taken that you think you'd like him to comment on.

See you!

STILL MOVING
January 25 – February 5, 2016
Artist talk and reception: Wednesday, February 3rd, 12:00 – 2 pm.
Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries, Pao Hall
Please join us for STILL MOVING, an exhibition co-curated by Joseph Mougel, assistant professor of art at the Peck School of the Arts, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Purdue’s assistant professor of photography, Min Kim Park. The exhibition addresses the issues of photography and moving image through the work of eight nationally and internationally recognized artists: Cecelia Condit, Charles Gick, Joseph Mougel, Stephen Hilyard, Kevin Cooley, Hans Gindlesberger, Walker Pickering, and Min Kim Park. The exhibition is currently on display in the Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries in Pao Hall and will remain up through Friday, February 5th.

Co-curator and new media artist Joseph Mougel will be in the gallery on Wednesday, February 3rd, to speak about his work as part of the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts’ 1st Wednesdays at Noon artist series. Mougel’s creative research draws on his service in the U.S. Marine Corps as he applies photographic sensibilities to a field-based practice, employing landscape interventions and ritualistic activities to address contemporary concerns surrounding land use, labor issues, and individual identity. The 1st Wednesdays at Noon series includes a complimentary  light lunch. If you would like to join us for lunch, please RSVP to Denise Anderson-Laws at (765) 494-2787 or email dklaws@purdue.edu . If you would rather skip the meal, you may join us in the gallery at 12:30 pm for the talk.

The Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries are located at 552 W Wood St, West Lafayette, IN, in Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue. All Galleries’ exhibitions are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 10 am – 5 pm, and Thursdays 10 am – 7 pm.

1st Wednesdays @ Noon is presented in association with Piano Solutions of Indianapolis and the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts

Exhibition Opportunities!!

Hello Art and Design:

In just a couple of weeks, we will be collecting work for two juried student art exhibition opportunities in the Rueff Galleries. Please encourage your students to enter!

We are collecting entries February 8 – 10, 2016, in the Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries.

A&D Undergraduate Exhibition Quick Points
·         Enter up to three works in any medium, but work must be created as part of an A&D course
·         2D works do not have to be framed for entry, but will need to be “exhibition ready” for exhibit, if selected
·         $700 in scholarship awards will be presented in the following areas: Three in Fine Art, Three in Design, One in Photography. Honorable mention awards will be presented as well.
·         Exhibition dates are February 23 – March 24, 2016, in the Patti & Rusty Rueff Galleries
·         Details are available in the gallery and online:https://www.cla.purdue.edu/academic/vpa/rueffgalleries/Undergraduate/index.html

Westwood Quick Points
·         Undergraduate *and* graduate students are eligible to enter
·         Enter up to four works in any medium; work does not have to be created as part of an A&D course
·         2D works do not have to be framed for entry, but will need to be “exhibition ready” for exhibit, if selected
·         Work will be on display in Westwood, the home of Purdue’s president
·         Work is on display for six months, and Westwood is not a public exhibition space. Artists will be invited to the house for an exhibition reception at some point during the exhibit.
·         Details are available in the gallery and online:https://www.cla.purdue.edu/academic/vpa/rueffgalleries/Westwood/index.html

We will be collecting work for both competitions at the same time this year, and students may enter and exhibit the same piece in both shows (there will not be a schedule conflict). Motivated by numbers? Last year, the Undergraduate Exhibition had 107 entrants submit 235 pieces and 110 works were accepted. Westwood averages about 50 entrants per show, each entering 2-3 pieces with about 50 works accepted. Let’s increase those entry numbers and make some great shows!

Today's class is canceled due to the instructor's emergency.
We will do what was planned for today on Monday.

Thank you.
